Inaccurate. When you unplug your headphones from a Mac, it automatically sets the volume to the Speaker volume setting. The Mac keeps track of different volume settings for speakers and headphones.

iOS devices do the same, but also keep track of headsets and headphones differently. Not sure if the Mac shares this extra feature.
